Every hero should have one, and I'm happy to give it our Editors' Choice. But none of that actually appears on the bow itself, which is an open-ended, flexible toy for active play. Words like "sweet," "crush," and "feminine" appear more often than either Nina or I would have liked. I don't love gendered toys, and Nerf's marketing copy is a little overenthusiastically girly. That's plenty good enough for great play. On the box, it says it shoots "up to 75 feet." We took 20 shots indoors with no wind, and found that it averaged 35 feet, with a maximum range of 55. The Guardian only misses a perfect rating by overstating its range. I tested it by shooting 100 times in rapid succession, and it didn't lock or jam. The basic mechanism seemed sturdy enough. The Guardian isn't the world's most solid toy the top of the crossbow element fell off sometimes, although it was easy to put back on. (By 20 feet or so, that's not much of an issue any more.) (Yes, I tested that.) It doesn't do lasting damage, of course, but it might if someone was shot in the eye at close range. The Guardian packs a bit of a punch, and at 10 feet, it'll sting if it hits you in the chest. Even seven-year-old Nina shot accurately with little practice.Īs with all shooting toys, it's very important to practice good firearm hygiene, including never aiming directly at another person. The Guardian has a small notched sight along the top brace the stock against your shoulder and fire along the sight, and you can consistently hit a bullseye at 10 feet. Older kids can get an optional $14.99 iPhone mount, which straps your iPhone to the top of the bow and lets you play augmented-reality games with it.Īt 10-20 feet, accuracy was startling. Interestingly, there's no "boy-style" equivalent, although Nerf has a range of orange blasters and a longbow for boys. It looks more fun, and it's more accurate than a traditional blaster, but more convenient than the full-sized Nerf longbow. The crossbow's long stock lets you brace it against your shoulder for accuracy. Nina and I both loved the design, which is girly without being hideously so.
